A Framework for Action on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Management OceanDocs
The WEHAB initiative was proposed by UN Secretary- General Kofi Annan as a contribution to the preparations for the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD). It seeks to provide focus and impetus to action in the five key thematic areas of Water, Energy, Health, Agriculture and Biodiversity and sustainable ecosystem management that are integral to a coherent international approach to the implementation of sustainable development and that are among the issues contained in the Summit’s Draft Plan of Implementation.

A framework for analysing corporate social performance; Beyond the Wood model AgEcon
Pierick, E. Ten; Beekman, Volkert; van der Weele, C.N.; Meeusen, Marieke J.G.; de Graaff, R.P.M..
Many business organisations put a lot of effort in raising their performance levels in the three dimensions of sustainability - i.e., people, planet, and profit. It is therefore important to measure and weight the effects of their efforts. In this report a framework is presented that is helpful in analysing the social, environmental, and economic activities of a business firm or chain. This framework is based on Wood's (1991) model of corporate social performance. However, it is enriched by incorporating contributions by other significant scientific studies in the fields of corporate social performance and business ethics. Furthermore, based on a review of the scientific literature, suggestions for operationalising the framework are offered.

A Framework for Analyzing Technical Trade Barriers in Agricultural Markets AgEcon
Roberts, Donna; Josling, Timothy E.; Orden, David.
Technical trade barriers are increasingly important in the international trade of agricultural products. Designing technical trade measures that can satisfy the growing demand for food safety, product differentiation, environmental amenities, and product information at the lowest cost to the consumer and to the international trading system requires an understanding of the complex economics of regulatory import barriers. This report proposes a definition and classification scheme to frame discussion and evaluation of such measures. Open-economy models that complement the classification scheme are developed graphically to highlight the basic elements that affect the economic impacts of changes in technical trade barriers.

A Full Repairing Lease: Inquiry into Ecologically Sustainable Land Management AgEcon
Industry Commission.
On 17 January 1997 the Government referred ecologically sustainable land management in Australia for inquiry and report within 12 months. For the purposes of this inquiry, land used for agricultural or pastoral purposes includes both the land and associated vegetation, and ground and surface water including rivers, riversides and wetlands, whether publicly or privately owned and whether currently or potentially available for economic use. In making its recommendations, the Commission is to improve the overall performance of the Australian economy while meeting the core objectives of the National Strategy for Ecologically Sustainable Development. The Industry Commission's package of recommendations was built around three major components. In brief, these...

A gap analysis of confined field trial application forms for genetically modified crops in East Africa: evaluating the potential for harmonization AgEcon
Linacre, Nicholas A.; Cohen, Joel I..
The regulatory approval of genetically modified crops in the field initially requires small, restricted experimental trials known as confined field trials. These small scale experiments provide researchers with important information on environmental interactions and agronomic performance of the crop in a safe and contained manner. To authorize confined field trials regulatory review is required, with formats for obtaining relevant information differing from country to country. In this paper, a Gap Analysis is used to identify informational gaps and potential for harmonization of confined field trial application processes in three East African countries - Tanzania, Kenya, and Uganda. The basic principle behind gap analysis is a comparison of the status quo...

A gender performance indicator for irrigation: Concepts, tools and applications AgEcon
van Koppen, Barbara.
Although gender issues are today a priority on the agendas of irrigation policy makers, interventionists, farm leaders and researchers, there is still a considerable gap between positive intentions and concrete action. An important but hitherto ignored reason for this is the lack of adequate generic concepts and tools that are policy-relevant and can accommodate the vast variation in irrigation contexts worldwide. The Gender Performance Indicator for Irrigation (GPII) aims to fill this gap. In any particular scheme, this tool diagnoses the gendered organization of farming and gender-based inclusion or exclusion in irrigation institutions. It informs irrigation agencies what they themselves can do for effective change-if necessary. The tool also identifies...

A general differential demand model for mixed quantity- and price-dependent equations AgEcon
Brown, Mark G.; Lee, Jonq-Ying; Gao, Xiaoming.
A mixed demand system is developed using the fundamental matrix equation of demand theory. The model parameterization combines the parameterizations of the quantity- and price- dependent Rotterdam models. The relationship between the mixed-demand-model parameters and the underlying direct and indirect utility functions allows analysis of various separability assumptions.

A Global Hunger Index: Measurement Concept, Ranking of Countries, and Trends AgEcon
Wiesmann, Doris M..
Progress in combating hunger and undernutrition has been lagging for decades. Best practices to fight hunger and undernutrition have been available for a long while, but lack of political will among leaders and a lack of political power among the poor have hampered their implementation. Since indices have proven to be powerful tools for advocacy and are able to capture multifaceted phenomena, the Global Hunger Index (GHI) was developed to increase attention to the hunger problem and mobilize the political will to speed up urgently needed progress in the fight against hunger. The GHI captures three dimensions of hunger: insufficient availability of food, shortfalls in the nutritional status of children, and child mortality, which is to a large extent...

A guide to participatory experiments with underutilised genetic resources Organic Eprints
Costanzo, Ambrogio; Seroplay, Ester; Rey, Frederic.
Diversifood has undertaken a series of parallel experiments, all testing the same underlying hypothesis expressed in the “working definition” that reintroducing genetic resources with a status of underutilisation can trigger benefits in provisioning agroecosystem services and supporting local, high-quality value chains, in the overall framework of agroecological systems. This booklets considers a diversity of practices and incorporates the experience of the trials and the lessons learned on how to plan and conduct such trials, including practical consideration and tips to facilitate their execution out of the controlled conditions of experimental stations while still obtaining detailed and relevant information. It includes sections on sourcing seed,...
